Phonetic Alphabet Tool
April 2023
Approach:
Using Adobe Illustrator, I designed assets that incorporated the distinctive colours of Incident Command, namely orange and blue.
For the interactive platform, Storyline was the natural choice. Each tile within the tool, when selected, features a voiceover to demonstrate
the correct pronunciation of the word, enhancing the learning experience.
Results:
The solution has received resounding acclaim from both trainers and firefighters. It is now poised for seamless integration into their training lessons, marking a significant step forward in helping firefighters master the phonetic alphabet for effective radio communication during emergencies. The manager of Command has also asked to use this for their teams.
Objective:
In response to a trainer's request, I embarked on a project to create a valuable tool to help firefighters master the phonetic alphabet for effective radio communication during emergencies. The task was to design an interactive solution that would address this specific training need.
Challenges:
The project encountered several hurdles, primarily related to the outdated photos of fire appliances. These images were a mix of correct and incorrect representations. Adding to the challenge, the files had different naming conventions, including radio names (e.g., "ALP"), actual names (e.g., "Aerial Ladder Platform"), and other complex labels. To tackle this, I coordinated with the head of Command to create a comprehensive list of photos, each requiring the correct renaming. As I awaited these changes, I began working on the tool's design.
